Horseback Riding On Maui
Makena, Maui, HI
Makena stables, located in south Maui, has some fantastic horseback riding opportunities. Since 1983 when it
opened, Makena has been owned and operated by Pat and Helaine Borge. Their horses are well trained and kept.
Each rider is matched to a horse, based on their riding experience and personality. The trail ride groups are
kept small (maximum of 6) so everyone gets personal attention. All rides are on the Ulupalakua Ranch, which is
20,000 acres of beautiful Maui land that overlooks the Ahihi Kinau Natural Area Reserve and La Perouse Bay. It also
offers spectacular views of the most recent lava flow and other islands.
Makena offers a morning ride, starting at 8:30 am and lasting until approximately 11:30. It is a moderately
challenging ride, but is suitable for most levels of riders. There is two hours of riding, and a half hour break
for a snack of fresh fruit and water. The tour climbs up to Kalua O Lapa, the vent formed by the last eruption on
Maui. There are beautiful views including the lava fields, and the island of Hawai’i.
They also offer a sunset tour, which they claim is the “original and still the best” sunset ride on Maui. It is
a 2.5-3 hour ride during the best part of the day, with a cooler breeze blowing. The ride climbs up the slopes of
Ulupalakua Ranch exploring the hills overlooking La Perouse Bay. See the sun sparkle on the sea, as the sun slowly
sets behind the hills. There is a refreshment break that includes fruit and water.
Makena Stables also has private rides for everywhere from one rider to four.
The prices for the tours varies from $145-170; call for reservations, which are required.
